Our God Reigns

Here is a quick “Bible trivia” question for you: which
nation or nations from Bible times have remained in continuous existence as
a unified state since before the time of Christ? Answer: only one—Egypt.
Egypt’s
history can be traced to 3000 BC. No other nation that we read about in the
Bible, including Israel,
has endured continuously over the millennia. All the others have risen to
power and then fallen either into powerlessness or into complete obscurity:
Assyria, Babylon, Persia,
Greece and Rome were all mighty, influential empires in
their day. Where are they now? They are dust under our feet.
If we were to look beyond the Bible and review world
history, the results would be the same: only China has
remained as a bona fide “empire” throughout history, going back to 2000 BC. China’s dynasties were in place when Abraham was
called out of Ur!
All the others: the Ottoman Empire, Russia
(including the Soviet Union), and the British Empire
have either expired or are simply shadows of their former selves.
As Americans, we are rightfully proud of our country and
history. The Lord has blessed us in numerous ways throughout our years. But
we must be mindful of the fact that many of the nations that no longer exist
today reigned in history for a much longer period of time than
America. In addition to
Egypt and China, the Roman Empire lasted over 400 years;
the Ottoman Empire lasted for 625 years and the British
Empire endured 875 years (some would say it continues to today). America is 232
years old; the Assyrians lasted just a bit longer—270 years, and the
Persians died out at 220 years.
As we face another Presidential election, it is easy to
believe that this election is the most important one of all. It is easy to
believe that our nation’s entire future depends on who we elect as
president, as well as other governmental leaders. Please do not
misunderstand me; the secular leadership of this nation is very important. I
urge every one of my readers to pray about your vote and to cast it by God’s
grace.
But history reveals that there is more to the story than
human leadership. The truth is that it is GOD MOST HIGH who rules the world.
Our LORD is the One who raises up not only leaders, kings, presidents and
rulers, but whole nations and determines their times and epochs. Your vote
is important, but your PRAYERS are more important. Seeking to be a good
citizen is right; seeking JESUS and His KINGDOM is righteousness.
America
will not last forever. It is destined to fall into obscurity just as all the
other nations of the world have done. Only one King, and only one Kingdom
will endure forever and ever.
Now therefore, O
kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the
LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, lest
He become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be
kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
